1. Developer Option

Many of you might have not heard about this option. But, let me tell you every Android phone comes equipped with the ability to enable Developer options, which lets you test some features and access some advanced tools.

It also allows you to configure system behaviors that help you profile and debug your system to perform efficiently.  There are lots of setting options available in the Developer Option.

You can speed up your device with some changes in some settings. There are three types of animation scales in the developer option, which are the Transition animation scale, Animator duration scale, and Window animation scale. All three of these animation scales control the animations that appear in the system when you open a window, scroll through a page, or transition between different screens.

Change the animation scale in Android

To even access the animation settings, you need to have Developer Options enabled So, follow these steps to get there:

  • In your phone go to Settings.
Tab 7 Time on build number in your android
  • Then scroll down and tap About phone. There you will find the Build number section.
  • Start tapping the Build number section continuously for seven times, until you get a pop-up text saying that you’re a Developer now.

  • After this, the Developer Options section will appear in the Settings Menu.

Now, that everything’s set for the changes. You’re ready to alter the animations. Here’s how to do that:

  • Get yourself to the Developer Options.

  • In this, scroll down until you find Windows Animation Scale, Transition Animation Scale, and Animator Duration Scale options.

  • Here, you got all three options, to get the best result on the speed. Simply, tap on these animation options and decrease them for better results. Even you can keep them off according to your preference.

Effect of animation scale on battery

It is obvious that the better animations utilize more CPU. But, if you turn off or reduce the animations in developer options it will improve your battery as your CPU will have one less operation to perform.

One more thing, you probably will not notice any major difference as the CPU has much more to handle other than animations. So, animations scale doesn’t have any major impact on your battery.

2. Limiting background process

We all know that Android is a highly multitasking platform but, this could be the reason for your low speed too. When you minimize the app or switch to another app without closing the previous app. In this case, the previous app is not closed and still running in the background.

This could lead to memory and CPU consumptions and hence, makes your device slow. However, on smartphones or the one’s with low-end specifications and lesser memory, this becomes an issue as unnecessary processes tend to eat up your resources, preventing the phone from running smoothly.

What if I tell you that you can limit these background processes or even kill them. I know you will be surprised but, that’s really true it is possible with the help developer option.

To limit the background process, first users need to enable Developer options from the settings and follow the following steps:

  • First, open Settings on your Android device.
  • Then, Go to the About Device section and tap the Build number for about seven times in order to unlock Developer Options.
  • After this, the Developer Options section will appear in the Settings Menu.

Now everything is ready to make changes, this is how you can do that:

  • Then, simply get back to the Settings page and navigate towards the Developer Options.

  • Tapping on the Background process limit option could show you the 6 options having Standard, No background process, At most 1 process, At most 2 processes, At most 3 and At most 4 processes.
  • Simply, choose the one according to your preference.

Also, other than that Background Process limit option there is Don’t Keep Activities option that instantly kills those activities which the user leaves. So, if you want you can also enable this option.

Drawbacks of Limiting the background process

There are not any major issues related to that, but let me tell you that it will reload the entire app from scratch. So, you can’t leave anything between and continue again, it will take you to the starting point of the app.

3. GPU Rendering

The GPU is the Graphics Processing Unit of the system. At its core it is quite similar to the CPU, but instead of performing tasks and calculations related to the hardware and operating system, it puts stuff on the screen for your eyes to see. So, the overall performance could be improved if the GPU renders the data quickly.

For this, I will give you some settings. Enabling these settings will offload Windows & app components like buttons, text, and 2D graphics calculations to the GPU quickly. This will make your phone render UI animations better and feel less laggy.

I am sure you’ll definitely achieve a smoother experience and a better frame rate during use. Also, forcing GPU rendering definitely makes sense on devices with a weaker CPU and specifications.

To force GPU rendering, first users need to enable Developer options from the settings and follow the following steps:

  • Go to Settings on your phone and scroll all the way down to the bottom.
  • If you don’t see the option developer option then, tap on About phone and look for an option called Build Number.
  • Tap on Build number seven times until you get a pop-up saying You are now a developer.
  • Now, Go back to Settings, scroll down and you will be able to see a new option called Developer options. Simply, tap on it.

  • Then, Scroll down to the segment of Hardware accelerated rendering and enable the option of Force GPU rendering.

If your device is anything less than a quad-core, I would recommend you leave it on at all times and experience better during use. Your device will feel quicker and display information on your screen faster than it used to.

Effect on Battery Usage

Remember, It drains the battery quicker that is faster than normal. So,  It’s up to you to decide if you want to have battery life for increased speed and some additional frame rates. With this in mind, You can decide the best for you and your system.

4. OpenGL (SKIA)

The games on mobile platforms (Android and iOS) have seen incredible growth in just a few years. The games were previously very simple, such as 80 PCs, these games have become extremely complex now. The low-end phones lag a lot while playing high graphic games.

If you want to play PUBG or COD smoothly then you can try these tricks to get smooth gameplay. Since not everyone has top phones, Google has found a solution to give people with weak phones a small performance boost.

This setting brings increased gaming performance provided we have Oreo Android OS or newer. On older versions of Android, this setting is not available. If you enable this option, your Android phone will render games at the highest possible quality.

The switching from the OpenGL graphic engine to OpenGL(SCIA) is quite easy for that you simply have to follow these couple of steps:

  • First, open Settings on your Android device.
  • Then, Go to the About Device section and tap the Build number for about seven times to unlock Developer Options.
  • After this, the Developer Options section will appear in the Settings Menu.

Now everything is ready to make changes, this is how you can do that:

  • Then, simply get back to the Settings page and navigate towards the Developer Options.
setting gpu rendering in android
  • Inside developer options, you should scroll down, and search for the Set GPU Rendering option.
Set SKIA in gpu render
  • In this, Tap and choose OpenGL (SKIA) here.

Remember, This feature drains a lot of battery life. Turning on this option might give you a high performance but things but the battery will drain quickly. So, in my opinion, after playing the game, you can revert to normal settings.

Overall, you are fine with battery drain then, it’s one of the best ways to speed up android phone performance for gaming purposes.

5. Lite Version of Apps

The large and heavy apps can slow down your android phone, forcing you to wait for menus to load and screen to appear. The solution is to replace your large apps with their lightweight versions. This could save your RAM as well as battery hence, improves your performance. You will be able to install these lite apps as usual, directly from the Google Play store.

Most of the popular Android apps like  Messenger, Facebook, Gmail, Chrome, etc take a lot of our RAM along with the battery, but we can solve this problem to some extent by using their lite versions.

Yes, as I already told you, using lightweight versions of apps in your Android smartphone can save your RAM & Battery. Also, they consume less CPU hence, provide you faster speed and performance.

The system updates are not always about new features, most of the time they also contain performance enhancements and bug-fixes that can effectively speed up your phone’s performance.

You have to make sure your system is always on the latest version available. You might ignore these updates due to the large size but, trust me they are worth downloading.

If you haven’t updated your Android phone to the latest system then, you should. As Google brings great improvements to each new release of the system update, including updates that ensure higher performance speed, ensure stability, and connectivity along with other user-friendly new features. To do the system updates you must follow these steps:

  • First of all, A WiFi or cellular connection is needed to download the updated file.
  • Open your phone’s Settings.

  • The update will take some time then, you must restart your phone.

The system updates occur once in several months. Nowadays, new system updates are provided by companies. You must be on the latest system as they usually include security and bug fixes. Among other things, it will improve the overall performance of your phone.

How Updates Work in your Phone

Google occasionally has upgraded the software on an Android phone by sending the updated status through a WiFi or cellular connection.

The notification of the available update appears on the screen when the phone is turned on. It is not compulsory to update your system, but you must do as you will get some updated features too.

Security and Encryption

Undoubtedly, there’s a definite chance that the security patch that you’ll be using for your phone becomes outdated.

In such cases, there’s a higher chance that your phone might be prone to viruses and malware. In order to prevent this, the system needs to be updated, so that you’ll have an improved security system and your data would be safe.

7. Third-party Launcher Apps

One more way to speed up Android Phone is by using launcher apps.  If you want to change the inside look of your phone and want to tweak some settings to make it feel speedier. Then, You might find a third-party launcher that does the trick.

Launchers control the home screen, the app drawer, and widget placements on your screen. A launcher can improve performance indirectly by

  • Organizing the most used apps and other ones.
  • Making it smoother in switching apps.
  • Various shortcuts and gestures to perform an activity.
  • Effective use of RAM and battery.

Some of them are optimized for speed. You’ll find a huge number of third-party launchers in the Play Store. My favorite among all is Nova and Evie launcher. You can definitely use them as they are best for increasing speed. I have given detailed information about them below:

There are many other cool features like options for dark themes and shortcuts for navigation which is found in Android Nougat. Overall, It has everything to speed up your phone for smooth use.

8. Managing Read and Write Process

Again, a very important thing is that you must never let your phone space get full. As this can slow down the read and write process in the memory. In memory, read and write processes are always going in the background according to your usage.

But, when the space gets full this process is interrupted hence, slow down your phone. I recommend you to clear your storage up to 18-20 % for smoother use.

As I said earlier you must always make sure your storage isn’t full. Remember, Having near-full storage is never good for your phone. It leaves only a limited amount of memory to read and write on, which can increase the level of fragmentation and also reduce battery life and of course performance too.

Read and write in android

It can have a significant effect on the phone’s performance and can irritate you with unlimited interruptions. Also, This introduces lag into the device. I will also suggest you go for one that offers fast read and write speeds while choosing an external memory card too.

How can you clear space for smooth read & write

Fortunately, our Android will display a notification once you’re running out of space, It presents you with options to clear out unused media and various app files.

It’s best to keep on top of the situation before that occurs to us, either using your phone’s built-in storage cleaner or by removing files manually.

When the internal storage is full of your phone simply, delete the unwanted data like apps, videos or photos from your phone. You can also copy the data into a computer to free up space on your phone’s storage. This all can increase the space for smooth read & write processes and hence, speed up android performance.

9. Uninstalling Hungry Apps

The apps running in the background eat up your battery and RAM, even if you are not using them. Some apps are built to run all the time and they can seriously impact your phone’s performance.

These apps are just hungry apps that suck down your battery. If you close these hungry apps, those apps will likely automatically reopen anyway in the background. Thus, the effect is reversed and energy consumption would be there even with no use.

When you get rid of unused or battery-intensive apps will go a long way in improving the speed of your Android phone. The most notable difference which you may notice is how long your battery lasts, but there will be a noticeable boost in performance, too.

How to find Hungry apps?

You don’t want to allow those apps that take up your space and consume battery too. So, to find those hungry apps you have to follow these steps:

  • Go to Settings on your phone.
  • Then go to the Battery option. In this, you will get the list of apps according to their battery consumption.
Hungry apps
  • Take a good long look down the list and identify the apps that take too much battery.
  • Simply, uninstall them if you don’t want or need them.

These apps consume a lot of battery and hence, affect the performance of the device.

What other Android apps should I uninstall?

Also, you can remove those apps that you rarely use and that consume excessive data. You may also find alternatives to hungry apps with the same specifications.

So, give one of those a try and you might love it as much as the original one.

10. Clearing cached App Data

The cached data is information that your apps store to load up more quickly and thus speed up Android. The cache should make your phone quicker. But, if it gets bloated then it can also have a negative impact.

You can remove cached data for those apps that have lots of cached data, individually by navigating to App info > Storage > Clear Cache in settings. But, this could take a lot of time clearing the cache of individual apps.

So, I have an app known as Nox cleaner. It can clean all the cache on your phone in one go.

The Nox Cleaner is one of the best cleaning apps for Android. It includes waste and junk cleaner. Mainly, it can clean up your cached data of an app. These all tools can improve the speed and performance of your android phone. Nox Cleaner is a better option for freeing cache and improving device performance as well as upgrading Android system speed on devices.

Besides, it can also find & delete the large files on your device and can remove the duplicates photos too.The excessive cache on your phone makes the phone slow. Nox Cleaner can free up RAM with just one click, and make the phone lighter and faster.

With this, You can also delete cache data from applications such as Whatsapp, Instagram, and others without worrying about finding the data for all. The Nox Cleaner app works smartly and is very handy to use. It adds a comfortable Android user experience.

11. Removing Widgets from Home Screen

The Widgets are the handy feature of Android that allows you to see and interact with apps on your home screen without launching the app.

To speed up your Android device, one more tip is to clean up the home screen by removing widgets. As, the widgets like google news consumes RAM and hence, affect your Android performance. You should clean away any unused icons and only keep the very essential ones. The less cluttered and messy your home screen is, it will be better in terms of performance.

remove widget from display in android

I would definitely say, these widgets can be helpful for finding information quickly which will save your time. But at the same time, they can consume the battery of the phone and slow down the speed too. So, it’s better to remove them. To delete a widget, simply tap and hold, then select remove.

What kind of Widgets should I remove?

There are many widgets that run in the background and take up your RAM. These Widgets reduce your device performance,  you may also notice a little shudder when transitioning between the screens or apps.

So, widgets like Google news, Live weather, social feed, etc can be removed. You can access these options in the Google app if needed.  Also, you can also reduce the number of widgets, especially data-intensive ones like Whatsapp, Facebook, It will help your android phone run more smoothly and last longer.

12. Avoiding Live Wallpapers

Just like widgets, another cool Android feature is the Live wallpapers that we put on the home screen. The Live wallpapers with moving elements in the background may appear very attractive to look at, but they consume your RAM to function continuously.

I want to let you know that live wallpapers will slow down your phone and drain the battery faster. The Live wallpapers use your phone’s GPU and CPU to render itself. So, it will decrease your battery life.

Live wallpaper in your phone

That’s why, if possible, use static, and not any kind of live wallpaper. So, Why not consider switching to a less fancy wallpaper as well. The black and dark wallpapers can save your battery as they utilize fewer pixels on the screen.

If you want to change your wallpaper then, simply long-press on the home screen and change your wallpaper. Go to Settings >> Home screen & wallpaper to switch to a static wallpaper.

Well, everything impacts your Android performance so, I suggest you avoid live wallpaper. But, if you only want live wallpaper then, you should check in the battery option and check out which consumes less power. The wallpapers that use more system resources will surely slow you down a bit.

I personally love live wallpapers too but I prefer speed and performance instead of fancy home page looks. It is one of the effective and easiest ways to speed up your Android Phone.

13. Force Disable Pre-installed Apps

I have noticed that there are tons of unnecessary built-in apps that are running in the background and consume RAM as well as CPU too. I want to remove them, but there is no option to uninstall them.

Disabling app in android

These built-in apps in the android can not be uninstalled and require root access to remove them completely. They consume resources and hence, consume battery as well as affect performance too. To solve this issue, thankfully we have got the ‘force disable’ option to stop them from running in the background.

There most of the apps that come pre-installed on your phone you can simply identify and disable them if you’re not going to use those apps. There are long-run benefits of doing so like the app will not run on your mobile. So, your mobile will not lag because of inefficient RAM and hence, speed up your android phone.

To force disable you have to go to Settings > Apps to see all the apps installed on your phone. There, you will find pre-installed apps too, by clicking them you can force-disable them. This step only needs a couple of minutes to perform.

Overall, I would say an easy way to stop unused pre-installed apps and improve your Android phone’s performance.

14. By Restarting your Phone

Sometimes your phone needs a fresh start. There is a lot going inside your android phone, thus giving it a fresh start from time to time is never a bad idea. Even trying all the previous tips will get you nowhere in your phone.

In this case, the best thing would be to just go ahead and do a very quick restart or reboot. If you need something very quick then, the best way to speed up a lagging Android device is to quick restart that gives you everything fresh.

Restart your android phone

Let me tell you that even after closing apps or they’re manually removed from memory, they’re not completely closed out. When you restart your phone, everything that’s in RAM is cleared out. The background processes and other on-going issues are resolved after reboot.

Also, the fragments of previously running apps are removed and opened apps are closed giving you the fresh phone. And with that, things are quicker. With this, Apps load and launch faster than before. Now, the switching between apps would be smooth. Therefore, I recommend you to restart your phone once a week or in some days.
