Gorilla Glass: 3 Vs 3+ Vs 5 Vs 6 Vs Victus | Drop Test, Scratch Test & Thickness

If you have been using a smartphone, then you must have heard about Gorilla Glasses. There are so many types of Gorilla Glass and they’re launching new ones almost every year. That might have left you wondering how these are different from each other. Well, you’re not alone, it can confuse anyone.

In this article, I am going to explain to you guys all the popular versions of Gorilla Glass and what similarities and differences they have. I am also going to tell which one is the best among these and should you be considering Gorilla Glass as a parameter to choose your next smartphone. So, let’s get started.

1. Thickness

The first thing to see in any protective glass is its thickness. But the thing is, there’s no fixed thickness for these glasses, but there’s a range. A smartphone brand can request Corning to make any glass for them of a particular thickness in this range. So, let’s check out the thickness of all of these glasses.

Gorilla Glass 3: comes in a range of 0.4mm to 2.0mm. This is a really thick glass when compared to other Gorilla Glasses.

Gorilla Glass 3+: Corning did not change the thickness in the new version of Gorilla Glass 3. Gorilla Glass 3+ comes with the same range as Gorilla Glass 3, 0.4 mm to 2.0 mm. Note that this wasn’t mentioned on the official page of Corning, but they have announced that they haven’t changed anything in the new version of Gorilla Glass 3 apart from resistance to accidental drops.

Gorilla Glass 5: comes in a range of 0.4 mm to 1.2 mm. This is thinner than the older versions and Corning tried to make it thin without compromising on the strength.

Gorilla Glass 6: has been made even thinner with 0.4 mm to 0.9 mm. This range is the thinnest by Corning to this date.

Gorilla Glass Victus: is in the range of 0.4 mm to 1.2 mm. Corning again increased the range for this glass. It’s the same as the gorilla glass 5 and older version but with many improvements in strength. But Corning also announces that they can produce this glass in any other thickness according to the smartphone manufacturer’s demands.

The Thinnest Gorilla Glass: As you’ve already seen, Gorilla Glass 6 is the thinnest glass made by Corning. They are constantly finding new ways to make the newer versions of Gorilla Glass as thin as possible with improved strength.

2. Drop Test Performance

Drop tests are something very important to consider on the smartphone screen. It shouldn’t be fragile and must survive minor accidental drops at least. Let’s check out how these glasses perform.

Gorilla Glass 3: can survive drops from up to 0.6 m-0.7 m of height. There are no official announcements regarding this but it has been tested by many users.

Gorilla Glass 3+: can survive falls from up to 0.8 m of height. This wasn’t mentioned anywhere on the official site, but some tech enthusiasts tested it.

Gorilla Glass 5: has been found to survive falls from up to 1.2 m of height, much better than Gorilla Glass 3 and 3+. Corning mentioned they have improved the strength with decreased thickness and they have certainly delivered that.

Gorilla Glass 6: can survive falls from up to 1.6 m of height. Corning has improved Gorilla Glass so much in drop tests even after making the glasses thinner.

Gorilla Glass Victus: pushed the limits to up to 2 m of height. This is fairly a really a bigger number, but it has been observed to beat all the other versions of Gorilla Glass.

The Best Gorilla Glass In Drop Test: By far, Gorilla Glass Victus is the best Glass in terms of drop tests. But other versions such as Gorilla Glass 6 and 5 are not too far behind. Gorilla Glass 3 and 3+ have a very low drop test performance.

3. Scratch Test

A different kind of test is performed to check the resistance of the glasses, called the Knoop test. It is performed with a rhombohedral-shaped diamond indenter. A certain amount of force is applied on the indenter and observed how much force the glass can survive. Here is how it looks.

Now, let’s check out how these glasses perform in the Knoop test.

Gorilla Glass 3: observed to stand almost 7 Newtons. It is mentioned on the official page of Gorilla Glass 3.

Gorilla Glass 3+: There is no official statement about this from Corning, but it is believed that there hasn’t been a drastic improvement in Gorilla Glass 3+ from the 3, so it might be around 7 Newton again here.

Gorilla Glass 5 and 6: Both have been observed to stand almost 4 Newtons, which is much lower compared to the 3 and 3+. So, there has been a steep fall in the resistance towards scratches.

Gorilla Glass Victus: Gorilla Glass is Victus and has been tested to stand up to 8 Newtons. Corning improved the performance in this version of glass. It is by far the most in the Gorilla Glass series.

The Best Gorilla Glass In Scratch Test: As you have already seen, Gorilla Glass Victus has the most resistance to scratches and by far the best in terms of resistance to scratches.

The next best will be Gorilla Glass 3 and 3+ and then 5 and 6. Others don’t lag behind too far, but Victus wins in performance overall.

Which Is The Best Gorilla Glass Overall?

Currently, the best Gorilla Glass is Gorilla Glass Victus, without any doubt. Scratch resistance for up to 8 Newtons, can stand falls from up to 2m, and an amazingly thin and beautiful looking glass. It is the latest one and the best you can get right now.

But Corning regularly upgrades its Gorilla Glasses and keeps on introducing new glasses. So, keep an eye on that too. So, if you have any doubts regarding any of the Gorilla Glasses then you can leave a comment down below and I’ll try to answer all of your queries.
