It kind of seems like the entire zombie game phase has kind of passed the gaming community by and it was at its prime a few years ago. But if you’re like me there’s always room for a zombie game every now and then.
In this article, I have shed the light on some of the most exciting and best free zombie games on steam. So, stick around till the end and find out which ones are the best and which one you should be playing. Let’s check out these games.
1. BrainBread 2
To start this list off I have BrainBread 2. The game is mostly an online game where you can partner up with other players and kill zombies. Or, you can create your own server to either play alone or with your friends. There are 5 different game modes as well.
The game has a lot of replayability and has pretty simple gameplay. There are good guys, zombies and you can be infected by zombies and switch to that side. But basically, your role as a human is to do a series of objectives as a team to beat the level. It has 20 maps in total so the game never gets repetitive. Overall, it’s pretty fun to play alone or with your friends.
Dead Frontier 2 is the sequel to Dead Frontier. It is an open-world zombie third-person shooter game. There aren’t many survival elements to the game other than eating and drinking to keep your health up. You begin your journey in Dalbo, the first of many infected towns. You could then team up with up to 8 friends and explore the buildings and areas for items and weapons.
As you explore and kill zombies you could level up and put skill points into all sorts of buffs for your character. It took a lot of inspiration from the resident evil games and actually does a good job of mimicking that sort of gameplay. The movement is also very smooth and guns are fun to kill with. If you enjoy third-person games then you must give this game a try.
3. Pandemic Express
Pandemic Express came out a couple of years ago and isn’t like other games on the list. It is a unique zombie survival game and gives you a different experience. The gist of the game is that there are a bunch of survivors and they have to survive the zombies which are also actual players. It sounds pretty generic but the way you play is a unique part.
you can use your guns if you are the survivors to propel yourself into the air and do all sorts of movements. You then have to catch a train that will take you to your destination to win without the zombies stopping you. I love this game because it never gets repetitive, as there are no bots and everyone is a player. Overall, it’s a pretty fun and different experience.
4. HordeCore: Training Ground
Horde Core Training Ground is just a prologue but a really fun one and one you should consider. I absolutely love the art style of this game because it’s really unique. The game follows a group of survivors in an apocalypse where you fight zombies and scavenge for supplies. You also have a hub area where you can upgrade your characters which all have pretty extensive skills trees.
The game also allows for local and co-op multiplayer modes and you can seamlessly switch between the characters as you play. Something I appreciated is that the NPC teammates aren’t useless and they actually kill zombies. The game is super polished and playing it was a lot of fun. I really like this one and if you try it out I’m sure you will too.
5. Transmissions: Element 120
Transmissions Element 120 is a short single-player game set in the half-life universe. It looks exactly like the half-life games with its dingy hallways and dark tunnels. You fight the familiar crab-head zombies that infected the population. There are so many weapons like crowbars, guns, and another typical one that you see in half-life games.
But what’s surprising is that this game is a mod created by a single developer in just a couple of years. The attention to detail really shows in the quality of gameplay even though this game is a very short one. It’s very polished and optimized. If you’ve ever played the half-life games or can’t afford them, then this is an awesome free option for you.
6. Walking Zombie 2
Walking Zombie 2 is another one of those hidden gems that a lot of people don’t know about. What I love most about this game is its art style. It’s really cool and simple. Basically, the game is about a young boy who was born during the zombie apocalypse. You play as this boy and eventually find your way to a small camp with a bunch of other survivors.
You can then go around and complete the main missions and side quests for money with which you can buy better weapons and upgrades. The only thing I don’t like is that it’s single-player only. But the gameplay really makes up for it. It’s a great zombie fps if you were ever bored and want to play something fun.
7. Dead Maze
Dead Maze is a 2D MMORPG zombie game and offers much more than what it looks like from the outside. The opening story sequences are a bit clumsy but the actual gameplay is pretty decent. You’ll find a large world to explore that’s filled with items to find and enemies to defeat. Just like other similar zombie games, you need to search for food and water to keep yourself alive.
It has a surprising amount of weapons to choose from and there’s a robust crafting system that lets you craft a ton of different items. I’m not exactly sure how large the world is but to me it seems like they put a lot of attention to detail in the scenery. In 2D style, it is definitely different from a zombie game but doesn’t disappoint you in giving you that fun you are looking for.
